Service Area & Transportation Policy
Clear service-area guidance and transportation coordination
The Nebraska Cremation Society serves families throughout the greater Omaha - Lincoln corridor, surrounding communities, and elsewhere. If you are outside this area, please contact us to discuss how we may be able to help. This page provides general information about service-area expectations, transportation coordination, and circumstances that may affect timing or cost.
Transportation is not simply a matter of distance. It also involves identification, custody, legal authority, documentation, safety, scheduling, and professional oversight. Geographic scope is determined by whether we can provide care in a way that maintains our standards for authority, identification, documentation, custody, safety, and timing. Distance is reviewed in relation to professional responsibility, not mileage alone.
Additional mileage
Additional mileage charges may apply when the place of death is beyond the established local service area. Mileage charges are calculated according to distance from Wahoo, Nebraska, using MapQuest and are based upon total one-way mileage from Wahoo to the city where death occurred.
50–100 miles: $2.50 per mile one way
101–150 miles: $3.00 per mile one way
151–200 miles: $3.50 per mile one way
Over 200 miles: $4.00 per mile one way
Our Established Service Area
The service area exists for practical and professional reasons.
It helps The Nebraska Cremation Society maintain a consistent process so that:
- the right person gives permission;
- the right identity is protected;
- required information is documented;
- custody is traceable;
- transportation is handled safely;
- each step occurs in the proper order.
The purpose is not simply to draw a boundary. The purpose is to make sure transportation and care can be provided correctly.
How Distance Is Reviewed
Distance is reviewed in relation to professional responsibility, not mileage alone.
For practical guidance, service-area questions are generally considered in three categories:
Established service area: communities in and around Wahoo, Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Ashland, Gretna, Elkhorn, Valley, Blair, Plattsmouth, Seward, and nearby Eastern Nebraska communities where transportation and care can ordinarily be coordinated under our standard procedures
Extended service review area: locations farther from our regular service area that may still be considered when legal authority, identification safeguards, custody documentation, staffing, timing, safety, and transportation can be maintained appropriately
Outside the established service area: locations that require case-specific review and may involve additional mileage, additional coordination, or assistance from another local provider or professional
These categories are intended to help families understand how we review location questions. They do not guarantee availability for every location or circumstance.
Transportation Within the Service Area
When a death occurs within the established service area, transportation is coordinated according to established procedures.
This generally includes:
- coordination with the place of death
- confirmation that death has been pronounced
- review of who has authority to authorize transfer and care
- identification safeguards
- documentation of custody transfer
- professional transfer by trained personnel
- coordination under licensed professional oversight
Under typical conditions, transportation within the established service area is included within published cremation service structures.
Transportation Outside the Service Area
Transportation outside the established service area may be considered after case-specific review.
That review may consider:
- where the death occurred
- distance from our regular service area
- whether legal authority can be confirmed
- whether identification and custody procedures can be maintained
- whether safe and appropriate transfer can be arranged
- whether coordination can occur under professional oversight
- whether another local provider or professional must be involved
- timing, staffing, weather, access, or other operational conditions
If transportation outside the established service area is available:
- logistical details are explained in advance
- any additional charges are identified when applicable
- authorization is obtained before transportation is coordinated
- the arrangement is documented in writing
No transportation outside the established service area is arranged without prior review and authorization.
Additional Circumstances That May Affect Transportation
Certain circumstances may require additional coordination regardless of location.
These may include:
- restricted or controlled access locations
- deaths occurring in hospitals, nursing facilities, hospice settings, residences, or public locations with special procedures
- involvement of a coroner, medical examiner, law enforcement, or county authority
- extended wait times
- unusual scheduling constraints
- weather or road conditions
- need for specialized personnel or equipment
- conditions affecting safe, respectful, or compliant transfer
- transfer from locations requiring additional documentation or access approval
When these circumstances apply, they are identified and explained before authorization whenever possible.
Pricing and Transportation
Transportation-related costs are based on the services selected and the circumstances of the transfer.
Costs may be affected by:
- location of death
- distance from the established service area
- additional mileage
- specialized staffing or equipment
- additional time required
- access or scheduling conditions
- coordination with outside professionals or providers
- special circumstances requiring additional resources
Any applicable transportation-related charges are identified and discussed before authorization whenever possible.
All pricing is governed by the General Price List, required disclosures, written agreements, and executed authorization documents.
Why Service Area Matters
The service area exists for practical and professional reasons.
It helps The Nebraska Cremation Society maintain a consistent process so that:
- the right person gives permission
- the right identity is protected
- required information is documented
- custody is traceable
- transportation is handled safely
- each step occurs in the proper order
The purpose is not simply to draw a boundary. The purpose is to make sure transportation and care can be provided correctly.
If a Death Occurs Outside the Service Area
If a death occurs outside the established service area, you may still contact us for guidance.
Depending on the circumstances, we may be able to:
- explain available next steps
- determine whether transportation can be coordinated
- identify whether additional charges would apply
- coordinate with another funeral provider or professional when appropriate
- help the family understand what information may be needed
Providing location information or asking questions does not create an agreement or initiate services.
If You Are Unsure Whether a Location Is Included
If you are unsure whether a location is within the established service area, we can review the circumstances and provide clarification.
Helpful information may include:
- the city or community where the death occurred
- the specific type of location, such as home, hospital, hospice, nursing facility, or another setting
- whether death has been pronounced
- whether hospice, a coroner, law enforcement, or another authority is involved
- who may have legal authority to make decisions
You do not need to know every detail before asking.
