Essential cremation

Simple cremation without a formal service coordinated by us

Essential Cremation is for families who prefer cremation without a formal service, ceremony, or gathering coordinated by The Nebraska Cremation Society.

Some families choose this option because they want simplicity. Some prefer a private family gathering at home, at a later date, or in another setting. Others do not wish to hold a public ceremony.

Essential Cremation provides the required professional care, documentation, authorization, coordination, and cremation process without additional service planning.

This description is provided for general information. It does not create an agreement, initiate services, or replace required authorizations.

No services are initiated until legal authority is confirmed, required documentation is completed, and authorization is provided.

Who This Option Is Designed For

Essential Cremation may be appropriate for families who:

  • Prefer a private or non-ceremonial approach
  • Do not want a formal service coordinated by us
  • Plan to gather privately or at another time
  • Want a simple, clear, and structured cremation process
  • Prefer to make only the decisions required for cremation and return of cremated remains

Choosing Essential Cremation affects the service structure. It does not change the care standards.

The same requirements for authority, identification, documentation, custody, and cremation authorization apply in every case.

What Is Included

Essential Cremation includes the core elements required for lawful, professional, and accountable cremation care.

This generally includes:

  • Transfer of the person who has died into our care within the established service area
  • Identification and custody procedures
  • Confirmation of legal authority
  • Completion and review of required documentation and authorizations
  • Coordination of cremation at a licensed crematory
  • Return of cremated remains as arranged
  • Communication regarding process, timing, and next steps
  • Written pricing disclosures as required by law

Specific services, timing, responsibilities, and charges are governed by the General Price List, written agreements, and executed authorization documents.

What Is Not Included

Essential Cremation does not include planning, staffing, or coordination of a formal ceremony, public gathering, visitation, or memorial service.

It does not include:

  • Planning or coordination of a ceremony
  • Organized gathering or memorial service coordination
  • Clergy, celebrant, music, or printed service coordination
  • Church, parish, cemetery, or committal coordination
  • Visitation or viewing as part of a formal service structure
  • Facility use for a ceremony or gathering
  • Additional service elements unless specifically requested and documented

Families may still choose to gather privately, hold a remembrance later, work directly with a church or cemetery, or make their own plans outside the services coordinated by The Nebraska Cremation Society.

A Simple Option, Not a Lesser Standard

Essential Cremation is not a lesser form of care.

It is a simpler service structure for families who do not need additional ceremony, gathering, church, or cemetery coordination from us.

The same safeguards apply in every cremation option: the authorized person must give permission, identity must be protected, required information must be documented, and each step must happen in the proper order.

How This Option Is Structured

Essential Cremation is limited to the services required for cremation coordination and return of cremated remains.

The structure is intentionally simple:

  1. Authority is confirmed
  2. Required documentation is completed
  3. Identification and custody procedures are followed
  4. Cremation is coordinated at a licensed crematory
  5. Cremated remains are returned as arranged

This option allows families to proceed clearly without adding formal service or gathering coordination unless additional assistance is later requested, selected, and documented.

For Families Working With a Church, Parish, or Cemetery

Some families choose Essential Cremation while also working directly with a church, parish, clergy member, cemetery, or other religious or community setting.

In that situation, Essential Cremation remains limited to cremation-related care, documentation, authorization, and coordination. The family may separately make its own arrangements with the church, parish, cemetery, or clergy.

For Catholic families, parish guidance is especially important. The parish or Catholic cemetery should provide direction regarding Funeral Mass expectations, liturgical requirements, committal practices, and the proper handling and placement of cremated remains.

Stated simply:

The church leads the ministry and theology. The Nebraska Cremation Society handles the cremation details selected and documented with us.

Families who want us to help coordinate around parish, church, cemetery, obituary, gathering, or committal details may wish to review Guided Cremation or Structured Cremation.

Pricing

Pricing is provided in writing and is based on the services selected and documented.

Charges may include:

  • The Essential Cremation service charge
  • Any additional services or items selected
  • Applicable transportation or service area considerations
  • Death certificates or other third-party charges, when requested or required
  • Additional requirements based on specific circumstances

Any applicable charges are identified and discussed before authorization whenever they apply. All pricing is governed by the General Price List, required disclosures, written agreements, and authorization documents.

Service Area and Additional Requirements

Published cremation service pricing applies within the established service area under ordinary transportation conditions. Additional review or charges may apply outside the established service area or when special circumstances affect transportation, staffing, safety, or coordination.

Additional considerations may include:

  • Transportation outside the established service area
  • Specialized equipment or staffing required for safe handling
  • Circumstances requiring additional coordination or resources

These are addressed before authorization when applicable.

What Happens Next

If you choose to proceed with Essential Cremation, the next steps are handled in a clear sequence.

Before services proceed:

  • Legal authority must be established
  • Required information must be gathered
  • Documentation must be completed
  • Cremation authorization must be provided
  • Pricing and selected services must be documented in writing

No cremation occurs until required authorization and documentation are completed.

A licensed funeral professional is available to explain each step and answer questions before authorization.

Where to Go Next:

You may ask questions before choosing an option.
