Obituary

Suzanne Duffy Poindexter was born on November 16, 1948, in Marshall, Missouri to Jane (Collier) and Charles L. Duffy. Suzanne grew up outside of Marshall, on her family farm, and graduated from Marshall High School in 1966. Suzanne was the youngest of six siblings, and was truly the "baby" of the family. Suzanne found her baby sister status both delightful and also frustrating . . . as she was trying to find her own voice among many strong voices. In developing this voice, she found the ability to be exceptionally stubborn, truly endearing, and genuinely loving at the same time. As a child, Suzanne looked like a young gangly Olive Oil from the Popeye comics. She had porcelain skin and large hazel green eyes, with jet black hair. In her youngest years, she often spent time during the winter with extended family. Her mother travelled each winter to the East Coast to take a job in a chicken processing factory to help support the family. Her father and siblings would take care of things at the farm. Suzanne had many memories of her parents "cussing and discussing the family farm", strategizing how to take care of things and keep the family afloat. She remembered being happy with very little at times, having an outhouse until she was 19 years old, and bathing in a metal tub filled with hot water from the stove. Suzannes mother made thick, beautiful quilts, filled with flannel inside, to keep her family warm. Suzannes mother also made delicious pies and cobblers, homemade cakes, excellent fried chicken and homemade donuts that Suzanne told people about for years. When asked about her growing up years, Suzanne loved most to be cozy in blankets while reading a good book. She loved the smell of new school books and pencils in the fall when she was headed back to school, loved chatting and laughing, and loved her family. She often cherished getting to spend time with her older siblings, as long as they werent "bossing her around". In her teen years, Suzanne worked at the highway truck stop near her farm. She liked school. She proudly wore the clothes her mother, the amazing seamstress, made her. She later told her daughters that she dated some lovable geeks before she dated her future husband. She always said that she noticed her future husband, Larry (Butch) Poindexter, when he was sitting at the side of the room in one of her classes in high school. She described his piercing blue eyes, quiet presence, and his linebacker frame that she loved. They dated off and on in high school. Larry received a football scholarship and was being scouted. Suzanne, his Suzi Q, also went to college. The story goes that they both made it through their first year of college and realized school wasnt for them. Suzanne said she spent more time having fun than studying, as it was so fun to have people all around. Suzanne and Larry (Butch) Poindexter married on June 1, 1968. They were married in Marshall, Missouri at Gill Memorial Baptist Church and celebrated 45 years together before his death in 2013. Larry searched for career options that would support his new family and quickly learned that Suzanne did not support his car racing aspirations. Butch tried many jobs . . . insurance sales, owning a gas station, etc. before starting to load trucks for Banquet Foods in Marshall. Suzanne worked for MFA and for the local paper. They had their first daughter, Abra Suzanne, on January 15, 1971. Larry quickly worked his way up to management at Banquet Foods and then moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri. Suzanne chose to stay home to raise the children, especially after they had their second daughter, Amy Janelle, on November 18, 1975. Suzanne sold Princess House crystal and also created a day care in their home to help support the family. Butch continued his career advancement and they had their third daughter, Brenna Kathleen on August 26, 1982. The family had a rich life with many family and friends in St. Louis. Suzannes mom came to live with them shortly after Brenna was born. Suzanne spent her time caring for others. She often said that in her thirties, she realized she was not going to change the world. She had to grieve this, and then she decided she might change the world through loving the people nearest to her. Suzanne and Larry eventually moved the family to Omaha, Nebraska in 1989 to continue his career with ConAgra Foods, Inc. Suzanne quickly developed life-long friendships with some of her new neighbors and some couples from Larrys career. She became a second mom to many of the neighborhood kids near their home in Elkhorn, Nebraska. While growing and overcoming lifes challenges together, Suzanne and Larry had the pleasure of many amazing adventures. Some of their best times were in Puerto Vallarta, Hawaii, North Carolina, Lake Tahoe and San Francisco. Suzanne treated Larry with a trip to Las Vegas for his 50th birthday where he met one of his golf heroes, Arnold Palmer. Suzanne and Butch were on a bowling league together and rejoiced in having company and friends come to their home. Simple times - morning coffee together, laughing over their animals and grand-animals and spending time with their family and friends were the times they cherished most. Suzanne and Larry believed in loyalty, generosity, and steady commitment to family and friends. They were known for welcoming people unconditionally, for helping people, and for their joy in their daughters. Suzanne especially has always been known for her laughter, for relishing Mexican food and margaritas, for her love of books, and for deep delight in Vegas, Lake Tahoe. As Larry finished his career with ConAgra in 2000, Suzanne returned to work. Suzanne first worked at Old Mill Toyota as a receptionist and then began working at Bank of the West Corporate Office. In this phase of her life, Suzanne spent her time caring for Butch with absolute loyalty, while enjoying the new friends she made at work and making them laugh. Butch passed away on November 6, 2013. Suzanne said often that she cherished the later years when they lived a more simple life again. They spent every day together, laughing and talking. Even though she wished Butch didnt have to suffer with his health, she was so happy to have the time alone that they had together and the time they had with their daughters. As her daughters developed their own lives, Suzanne was challenged to open to new ideas and experiences through them. Her focus was always her love for her girls, which allowed her to grow and adapt. Her daughters have been so glad to be part of that growth. Amy married Matthew Brack on May 11, 2007. Abra married Lara Colton on October 9, 2011. In the years since Matt and Lara joined the family, Matt became the son that Suzanne never had and Lara became her fourth daughter. She cherished her time with them, and loved them both. As Brenna fell in love 2015, Suzanne welcomed JD Gangwish and his two children, Carrie and Zander, right into the family. Suzannes oldest granddaughter is Kirah. Suzanne was so proud of Kirah. "Grams" demonstrated unconditional love for her and they loved to tease each other. Kirah and "Grams" shared a special bond - they both loved being cozy at home, their close family, and to laugh at silly jokes. Kirah married Benji Amoussou in February of 2017. Grams welcomed Benji with open arms and he has fast become a part of the family. Suzannes youngest granddaughter, Crystal, joined the family in 2016. Suzanne and Crystal were just starting to develop their own special relationship at the time of Grams passing. Crystal brought Suzanne two great-grand children, Ashleigh and Aurora, whose giggles and sweet baby snuggles made life more fun. Suzanne was diagnosed with Stage IV bladder cancer in 2016. She opted for treatment, before having a stroke in November of 2016, which took most of her eyesight and part of her memory. With her ability to work, drive, and read gone, Suzanne focused on her family and friends. She even began to make new friends with her care staff and the staff at the adult day program at Hillcrest Mable Rose Club. Suzanne passed away on September 15, 2017. She had chosen to come home, with hospice, after having acute renal failure. She wanted her cozy home and to be surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents: Charles and Jane Duffy; her beloved husband, Larry (Butch) Gann Poindexter; her brother Charles Duffy; her brother Robert Duffy and his wife, Mickey Duffy; her dear friend Nancy Hordvik and other good friends. Suzanne is survived by her three daughters: Abra and her wife Lara Colton, Amy and her husband Matthew Brack, of Omaha, NE; Brenna and her partner JD Gangwish of Shelton, NE; her granddaughters Kirah and her husband Benji Amoussou, and Crystal Williams also of Omaha; her siblings: Daniel (Peggy) Duffy; Barbara (John) Duffy; and Donald (Constance) Duffy; two great-granddaughters, several nieces and nephews; and many adored friends and extended family members.
