Sue Savateer Shoemaker passed away peacefully at home on July 9. Sue was born in 1936 in Merced, California. She was the only child of Avalyn Miner (Savateer) and Clyde Savateer. A graduate of Fresno State, Sue taught 4th grade for two years before marrying Roger Shoemaker in 1960 and moving, first, to Ventura, CA, and then on to Lincoln in 1969, where Roger joined his brothers in Shoemaker's Truckstop, and Sue made a comfortable home for Roger and their children. She was an active church woman, at Eastridge Presbyterian Church, then at Westminster, and, since 2006, at Southern Heights Presbyterian. She was a Deacon, Elder, Moderator of Homestead Presbytery, Commissioner to the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, and a delegate to the Presbyterian General Assembly. With Roger, she travelled to Germany, the Czech Republic, and Romania as part of the Westminster Presbyterian Church partner church relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lohmen, Germany. Outside of her church involvement, she was an energetic Phi Mu Fraternity Alumna, dedicating many hours to the UNL chapter. Sue was an avid handworker, and a charter member of the Lincoln Needleworkers Guild and will be remembered for her beautiful, exacting work. Her needlework legacy includes many images of her favorite flower, the purple iris, and 30-years-worth of handmade Christmas ornaments for each of her four children. For 25 years she volunteered at KUCV, now NET, radio, speaking with listeners all over the State as she took calls for Classics by Request. Her innate organizational skills and enjoyment of talking with people made her perfect for the job. She will be remembered for never doing a task halfway, her hospitality, her love of family and friends, her good humor, and perseverance.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Roger; children Deborah (John) Burgess, Pittsburgh, PA; Bruce Shoemaker, Tucson, AZ; Glen Shoemaker, Durango, CO; Elizabeth Shoemaker (Andrew Huot), Tucker, GA; six grandchildren; sister Joan (Carl) Klenk, Pleasanton, CA: and brother Thom (Barbara) Halls, Sanger, CA.
Her memorial service is Saturday, August 7 at 11:00 am at Southern Heights Presbyterian Church, 5750 S 40th St, Lincoln. Sue requested that memorial gifts be made to Southern Heights and NET Radio.
