Robert (aka Bob) Chandler, 86, of Lincoln, Nebraska and formerly Lakeland, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2020 following a long and difficult illness. He was born March 10, 1934, in Bangor, Maine, to Arthur and Helen (Banks) Chandler. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Lilian (Bonello) Chandler. He is survived by his son, Vernon A. (Lisa) and granddaughter, Katelyn, of Lincoln, Nebraska, sister, Barbara Montgomery, of Prattville, Alabama, brother, David Chandler (Jane), of Belfast, Maine, and several nieces and nephews. He will be cremated and interned at the Omaha National Cemetery during a private service.
Bob left home shortly after high school and served four-years in the United States Air Force. Following his honorable discharge, he worked in the civilian sector for a few years and then entered the government sector where he served as an accountant and auditor for various agencies. He was a life-long learner and completed a Masters of Business Administration from Husson College in Maine, along with a variety of professional certifications throughout his career. During his working years he travelled extensively and developed quite the portfolio of interesting stories. He met Lilian while working in Libya and, after a short engagement, they married in 1969 on the island of Malta, Lilian's home. Not only did he fall in love with Lilian, but also her entire family and the island itself. Bob and Lilian remained married until her death in 2016. He retired to Lakeland, Florida in 1986 following back-to-back tours as a Foreign Service Officer for the United States Agency for International Development in Nairobi, Kenya. In his retirement years, Bob was active in genealogy circles and in many local organizations both in Lakeland and Lincoln. Those that knew and loved him will remember him as a perfect gentleman with a dry sense of humor, infectious smile, and for always being on the hunt for a medium rare steak, an ice-cold beer and good company.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank sincerely Dr. Arthur Annin and staff, Dr. Lance Wiebusch and staff, Dr. Stephen Dunder and staff, the nurses and aides at Bryan East Hospital, and the many other medical professionals that cared for him over the past few years. Most notably and recently, the amazing team at Tabitha Journey House Hospice who ensured his comfort during his final days and treated him as if he was one of their own loved ones.
The family is also appreciative of the leadership of the Nebraska Army National Guard and ValueOptions Federal Services/Anthem, and the colleagues of Vernon and Lisa, for their compassion, support, and for allowing family to come first during this very difficult time.
