Leta Anne (Wells) Burnfield's beautiful soul left this world and headed for heaven on April 15, 2022, surrounded by love in the home that she shared in Lincoln, Nebraska, with her daughter Judy and grandson Ethan. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on August 21, 1930, to William Robins Wells and Leta Marie (Cochrane) Wells, Leta grew up in a loving family, living in Curling (Corner Brook), Newfoundland, and later Finch, Ontario. Leta earned her Bachelor of Nursing Science degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and further trained at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. Leta bonded closely with fellow students and subsequently travelled across Canada and the United States to complete short-term nursing assignments in a range of hospitals before returning to Toronto, Ontario, to head up nursing in the preemie ward at Toronto General Hospital. At Queen's University, Leta met Robert Norman (Norm) Burnfield, whom she married on May 9, 1956. Leta and Norm had three children (Robert, William, and Judith) and six grandchildren (Evan, Piers, Jotham, Anna, and Wells of Toronto, and Ethan of Lincoln). Leta was a caring, thoughtful mother and grandmother, positive, engaging, inclusive and unconditional in her love. Leta set an example of life-long learning when she returned to school to complete a Master's in Psychiatric Nursing at the State University of NY at Buffalo. She served as an Assistant Professor within the Nursing Departments at Niagara University and Queen's University in the 1970s and 1980s, imparting her love of nursing, patients, and students. Leta had a passion for gardening, theater, bridge nights with friends, caring for others, gentle laughter, and lingering over tea and a treat with friends. Leta cherished her many friends in the Lewiston area. Her pineapple delight and banana bread were family favourites. Leta and Norm travelled extensively with friends to Europe and elsewhere, especially after retiring. She loved her summer home in Nova Scotia and time with family and friends. Leta is survived and loved deeply by her children, grandchildren, sister Doreen of Toronto, nieces, and nephews. Norm died "too soon" in 2014. A special thanks to the CHI Health at Home Hospice program. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity aligning with your passion.
