Obituary

LaVerne J. Fortney, 97, of Elmwood, Nebraska, formerly of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on November 10, 2025. Born April 11, 1928, in Rock Island, LaVerne lived a long and joy-filled life centered on faith, family, love, and laughter.

She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her warm and personable spirit, and her deep love for children, babies, all of God's creation, and her Savior, Jesus Christ.

From an early age, LaVerne charmed those around her—winning a local baby contest and learning to tap dance as a toddler. Her humor and kindness drew people in wherever she went. Her life was rich with unforgettable moments, including the joy of meeting her fifth-generation grandchild. Known for her sweet tooth and even sweeter heart, she brought light and laughter to all who knew her.

LaVerne delighted in life's simple pleasures: making sashay scarves, cross-stitching, fishing, camping, exploring yard sales, solving word search puzzles, and enjoying riverboat dinner cruises. Some of her happiest memories were traveling to Branson with family during Christmastime. She proudly served her community as a member of the Auxiliary DAV and Auxiliary VFW, always dedicated to supporting her fellow veterans.

She is survived by her children: Ed Bak (Betty), Sharon Feldhake (Don), Tina Vanderpool (Glenda), and Vanessa Vanderpool. She was preceded in death by her daughter Debbie Earl and son-in-law Jim Earl.

LaVerne's legacy continues through her eight beloved grandchildren: Ed John (Gina) Bak, Joseph (Sara) Feldhake, Robert (Gwen) Feldhake, Cherie Earl, Jennifer (Nick) Miller, Sarah (Jason) Earl, Tavis Johnson, and Derek Johnson; eight cherished great-grandchildren; and one precious great-great-grandson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Quonset Hut in Elmwood on November 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at Omaha Veterans Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

LaVerne was a beautiful soul who will be dearly missed. We will love you forever.

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds." —Philippians 4:6–7
