Avey
Jan 11, 1955 — Mar 27, 2024
Kevin Craig Avey passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. He was 69 years old. Kevin was born to Marilyn and Gerald Avey in Carroll County, IA on January 11, 1955. His family moved to Lincoln, NE in 1960. Kevin went to Dawes Middle School where his passion for music began. He formed "Iron Horse" a garage band that performed at frat parties and proms. The band continued on through high school. Kevin graduated from Lincoln Northeast High in 1973. Kevin and some members from "Iron Horse" moved on to form the beginnings of "The Sandy Creek Pickers." "The Sandy Creek Pickers," a bluegrass and acoustic music band was formed in 1975. While performing a gig at Stan's bar he met the love of his life, Debbie. After living together for four years, Kevin and Debbie married on June 9, 1979. They honeymooned in Minnesota where they fished and riced. They welcomed the first of their two children in 1986, a girl, Jennifer. A son, Timothy, followed two years later in 1988. Kevin's love for music continued through the years. He passed on his knowledge to music students at Concordia University in Seward, NE, Southeast Community College in Lincoln, NE, and through private lessons in small music studios and out of the home. He expressed his love and musical talent in the genres of bluegrass, jazz, and folk with the bands "Shady Grove," "String Demons," "Jive Merchant," and "Skylark." Kevin's joy in music was only surpassed by his love for family. He cheered on daughter, Jenny at soccer games from second grade through her college career. He and Debbie traveled from games in Lincoln, as far as Marshall, Minnesota several times to watch Jenny play in college. Kevin supported his son, Tim in hockey from the age of three, through his high school years. He spent countless hours driving between Lincoln and Omaha for practices, in addition to long road trips around the country almost every weekend for tournaments. He was second to none in displaying his dedication to his children. Grandbabies, Lynnley (2013) and Bennett (2016) quickly became the light of his life. Kevin treasured all the time spent with them, especially in the big blue chair. Books were read, music was created, laughs were had, and cuddles were shared in "grampy's chair." Kevin and Debbie even made trips to the Williamson's temporary home in Kansas City to spend time with the grandbabies. Following the move back to Lincoln, he attended all of their activities from sports to music recitals, encouraging and supporting them. Kevin was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed watching University of Nebraska sports as well as the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Additional hobbies included the outdoors and reading books. In his earlier years, he enjoyed camping and hiking in the mountains and trails, while later in life, he took an additional interest in landscaping. Kevin is predeceased by his parents Marilyn and Gerald Avey. Kevin is survived by loving wife, Debbie Avey; daughter, Jenny (Matt) Williamson; son, Tim Avey; granddaughter, Lynnley; grandson, Bennett; sister, Geri (Kevin) Waechter; brother, Steve (Susan) Avey; and nieces and nephews.
