Obituary

John Edward "Junior" arrived September 20, 1928 in the coal-mining town of Arma, Kansas to John Sr and MaryAnn Sartore. He was born at home, and spent his boyhood summers fishing for bass in the strip pits of Southeast Kansas with his younger brother Gene. In the winters they would hunt to help put food on the table, bringing home quail, squirrels and especially rabbits. His love for both fishing and hunting continued all his life, until he just couldnt do it anymore. After high school (class of 1947), John attended Pittsburg State University (1951), then joining the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Stationed in south Texas the entire time, he would often grin while proclaiming "I fought the Battle of San Antonio." Afterwards, he continued his education thanks to the GI Bill, earning dual masters in chemistry and education (1957). John and Sharon met at a Wichita church in October 1960 and married January 21, 1961. His first job out of grad school was with Cities Service Oil Company at their Ponca City, OK refinery, where he worked as a bench chemist. This was long before OSHA and a dangerous place to be. After losing a few friends to things such as deadly gas leaks, he gladly accepted a job with Elanco (Eli Lily) in Omaha, where he spent the bulk of his working years running the labs quality control of livestock pharmaceuticals. He finished up his career as an environmental clean-up specialist for the US Army Corps of Engineers based in Omaha. When not on the job, John spent his time on Sharon's "honey-do" lists, enjoying his sons, updating the house, tuning up the family vehicles, worrying, gardening and grilling out on the deck. John Sartore was a hard worker, a loyal friend, faithful husband and the best father two sons could ever have. Alzheimer's took John's memories then his life. Preceeded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sharon (Meese) Sartore, his parents John Sr and MaryAnn, and in-laws Woody and Faynell (Johnson) Meese. Survivors include brother Gene (Annette) of Renton WA; sons Joel (Kathy) of Lincoln and Paul (Laura) of Omaha; grandchildren Cole, Ellen, Spencer and Sam. John will be deeply missed. Memorial Service to be held August 28th at 2 pm, Trinity United Methodist Church, 8009 Q St, Ralston NE 68127 with family visitation & refreshments to follow.
