Obituary

John Douglas Gerber, a lifelong resident of Kearney, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at his home on September 1, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on May 12, 1938, in Kearney to John "Jack" W. and Francis Gerber, John's life was rooted in the community he loved. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1962, where he served as President of Phi Tau Gamma. His leadership during his college years marked the beginning of a lifetime dedicated to service and civic engagement. A visionary entrepreneur, John founded and operated several cherished local businesses that became staples in the Kearney area. Among these were Gerbers Gifts, Super Sport Marine & Skate Shop, and Adventure Travel. Each endeavor reflected his creativity, drive, and commitment to enriching the lives of those around him.

John's devotion to his community extended far beyond business. He served as Chairman of the Downtown Improvement Board for 15 years, playing a key role in revitalizing downtown Kearney into a vibrant and welcoming space. He also gave generously of his time to organizations such as the Kearney Jaycees and the Sertoma Club, contributing countless hours to civic improvement and charitable causes. One of John's proudest accomplishments was helping foster and build the skateboard community for the youth of Kearney. In his final days, he reflected on how meaningful it had been to create a space where young people felt welcomed, encouraged, and inspired—a legacy that continues through stories shared by those whose lives he touched. John found great joy in sailing, a pastime that mirrored his adventurous spirit and love for exploration. Time spent on the lake with family and friends brought him deep happiness and forged lasting bonds within his sailing circle. He also had a lifelong passion for cars—whether admiring them in books, discussing them with loved ones, or enjoying Sunday drives.

Family was at the heart of everything John did. He was a devoted husband who cherished his wife, a loyal brother who honored his sibling, a committed father who never missed an event for his children, and a proud grandfather who delighted in every moment with his grandchildren. John is remembered for his generous spirit, humble nature, and unwavering resilience. Whether navigating Nebraska lakes or charting new paths in business and life, he approached each journey with enthusiasm and grace. He is survived by his beloved wife Gwendolyn Welch Gerber; daughter Courtney Murdoch and her husband David; son Jason D. Gerber and his wife Sondra; grandsons Austin, Colton, and Jaeden; granddaughter Lavender; brother Gaylord Gerber; niece Emily; nephew Paul and a new great-granddaughter, Haven, born on his birthday this year.

A celebration of John's life will be held at Yanney Park Pavilion on September 29 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., where friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who gave so much to his community.

In lieu of flowers, donations will contribute to a special bench that will be placed in the Kearney skate park in honor of John's memory.

May his legacy continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
