Jane Mathews, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, died in Omaha, Neb., on the evening of July 14, 2021, after a 12-day battle with acute myeloid leukemia. She was 59.
She was born on Aug. 31, 1961, in Nacogdoches, Texas, to Jack and Minta Rhea (Perry) Mathews.
She loved working with her father, Jack, at Mize Department Store in downtown Nacogdoches, and joining him on trips to Dallas Market Center for buying inventory. This experience sparked a lifelong love of fashion and retail.
Jane graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1979 and then attended Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport. She earned associate's degrees from the Fashion Art Institute of Dallas in 1982, and an associate's degree in management development from Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, in 2002.
Jane was a natural in the retail business for 30 years, including jobs in the Galleria in Dallas, Macy's and Dillard's in Houston and later returning to help her father at Mize in Nacogdoches. She had an East Texas talent for connecting with people and helping customers find what they wanted and feel good about their purchases.
In 2006, she moved to Omaha and continued working in retail. She was a member at the Millard Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Omaha.
"A highlight to Jane living in Omaha was making many new friends with her spiritual family," said her longtime friend Dawna Bender. "She was an active member of the Millard congregation. She loved to talk about Jehovah with others, even those she would meet in businesses, drive-throughs, doctors' offices, etc."
Jane loved writing and sending cards to make others feel special and cared for. She loved sending flowers and kept FTD in business with gifts for special occasions or just to make people happy.
Dawna and Jane often went to Lied Lodge in Nebraska City to enjoy a couple of days walking and shopping the historic stores, relaxing in the hot tub, swimming in the pool, and tasting the delicious entrees of the lodge.
She also enjoyed local history, including visiting Lewis & Clark Museum, Durham Museum, Joselyn Art Museum & the Old Market.
Jane was a well-known cat lover. All of them were special to her and they would actually "talk" together.
Even in Omaha she was always looking for some good Texas BBQ, catfish & hush puppies, shrimp and her favorite ribeye steaks with all the "fix'ins."
Jane loved painting and was a very talented artist using watercolors as the medium of her unique creations. She was an avid shell-seeker when walking the beach in Galveston, and moving to landlocked Nebraska enhanced her longing even more for the ocean. To compensate for that she loved driving the farm land to admire the beauty of the crops before harvest time (and of course, eating sweet corn).
Jane is survived by her father, Jack of Nacogdoches; her sister Ann, brother-in-law Richard and niece Abigail, all of Bremerton, WA.; sister Twila Carter of Houston; and dear friend Dawna Bender of Omaha. She was preceded in death by her mother, Minta Rhea.
Due to COVID, services will be held via Zoom on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. Central time, with Darryl Gucwa, a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses in Omaha, Neb., presiding.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jehovah's Witnesses, http://donate.jw.org/, Worldwide Work.
