He graduated from high school in 1952 and, on September 20, 1956, he began serving in the United States Army. He was Honorably Discharged August 18, 1958. Ervin spent his entire career working at Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T Technologies/Western Electric. He retired in 1992. He was co-owner of Pawnee Pines Nursery and Christmas Tree Farm. Ervin was a long-time member of the Audubon Society and watching and feeding birds was a beloved past time. Tending his flowers, Keno, and cards occupied much of Ervin's free time. He enjoyed playing Pitch and Bridge, but mostly enjoyed a good game of Poker with his family.
