Dixie M. Strauss
December 24, 1939 – September 3, 2024
Dixie M. Strauss, 84, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024, leaving behind a rich legacy of faith, love and a lifelong commitment to education.
Born on Christmas Eve in Hastings, Nebraska, Dixie was a holiday gift to her parents, Vernon and Marie Wyman. Her early years saw her living in various Midwestern towns, but she settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, after graduating from high school. It was here that she worked as a secretary for Trend Homes, where she met Paul Strauss, the boss's son—and the love of her life. Together, they built a life centered around their family.
Dixie never stopped learning. While raising their children, she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, balancing family life and her love of knowledge. In 1984, the family moved to Westminster, Colorado, where Dixie pursued her master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She found her true calling as a special education teacher, where she found great fulfillment in helping children overcome their struggles.
Dixie and Paul eventually retired to Colorado Springs, where they embraced life's next chapter with new friends and experiences. After Paul's passing in 2015, Dixie returned to Lincoln, where she continued to be a loving and proud matriarch.
A dedicated member of PEO, Dixie had a deep love for philanthropy and education, especially for women. Her unwavering faith was central to her life, and her church family brought her much joy throughout the years. Although Dixie was immensely proud of her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held an extra special place in her heart.
She is survived by her children, Doug Strauss, Randall Strauss, Laurel Baillie (Boyd), Alan Strauss (Sharon), Jed Strauss (Carrie), and Elizabeth Becker (Scott); her brother, James Wyman (Joann); 15 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, and countless nieces and nephews. She joins her beloved husband, Paul, and their dear son, Braden Wyman Strauss, in heaven.
A celebration of Dixie's life will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 10:00 am in the chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church (2110 Sheridan Blvd, Lincoln, Nebraska). Friends and family are invited to join in remembering the warmth, wisdom and love she brought to the world.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Cottey College, continuing Dixie's passion for education and empowering future generations of women.
