Obituary

Derek John Helgoth, 41, died March 24, 2023 at Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Funeral Services will be April 1, 2023 at 10:00 am at Christ Lincoln Church 4325 Sumner street, Lincoln, Nebraska, followed by a celebration of his life at Roca Berry Farms 16531 South 38th street Roca, Nebraska ( Pioneer Barn ). Derek was born April 1, 1981 in David City, Nebraska to John Helgoth and Kristie ( Helgoth ) Lampkin. Derek's early childhood years were spent on a small farm near Garrison, Nebraska where he loved being outdoors playing with his siblings and cousins. He also enjoyed fishing with " Bampa " grandpa Ralph on the many family camping trips. His family moved to David City where Derek participated in baseball, football, wrestling and golf at the David City high school and graduated in 1999.

His love for sports was carried over into his adult life. He excelled in fast-pitch softball and was a member of the 23 and under Little Water softball team which won multiple state championships.

Derek served as the assistant softball coach for Columbus High School for four years and as the assistant softball coach for Central Community College for seven years. He was inducted into the CCC Athletic Hall of Fame along with the 2011 softball team for their outstanding accomplishments.

Derek worked for Hog Slat of Columbus, the Columbus Softball Association maintaining and grooming of the softball fields at Gerard Park, the City of Columbus Van Berg golf course, and the Columbus Public Schools maintenance department.

Derek was a quiet and unassuming sweet soul. He loved to cook, bake and barbecue. He loved working on complex puzzles and he had the patience of a saint when it came to fixing things. He also loved hunting with his brother Tyler and playing cards and board games with his siblings. No matter how he felt when asked, Derek would always respond with a soft, quick "Good". He had a great laugh that was actually more like a giggle. His love and passion for Husker football and volleyball were second only to his beloved Green Bay Packers. Derek loved being with family, especially his little nieces and nephews. They brought a huge smile to his face as soon as they entered the room. Derek will be missed by many that knew him, because "to know him was to love him!"

He is survived by his mother Kristie Lampkin ( Mike ) of Lincoln, brother Tyler ( Cassie ) Helgoth Lincoln, Sisters: Stacey ( Mike ) Mitchell, Lincoln, Kayla (Justin) Finck Lincoln, Brooke ( Ron ) Skoda, Lincoln.
